2.2 Critical Patents Missed by Public Models

ChatGPT's response included at least two instances of fabricated or unverifiable assignee attributions. For US 11,367,895 B1, the listed assignee was "Likely startup / defense contractor cluster." In both cases, the model appears to have inferred the assignee from contextual patterns in its training data rather than retrieving the information from patent records.
In any operational IP workflow, assignee identity is foundational. It determines licensing strategy, litigation risk, and competitive positioning. A fabricated assignee is more dangerous than a missing one because it creates an illusion of completeness that discourages further investigation. An R&D team receiving this output might reasonably conclude that the landscape analysis is finished when it is not.
3. Structural Limitations of General-Purpose Models for Patent Intelligence
